How it plays

23 rules screens from the game

Dead Man's Trail runs five reels of four rows over 40 fixed lines, read from the leftmost reel. The Wild is the top symbol, 60x the stake for a full line of five, and substitutes for every symbol but the Bonus ship; the four pirates below it, Commander, Collector, Scout and One-Eye, pay 30x, 15x, 5x and 5x for five, and the royals 3x. Nothing cascades: one spin, one screen, one payout.

Gold coins land on any reel carrying a printed value, from 1x to 100x the stake in the logged series. When coins sit on at least three different reels the game adds up every coin on the screen and pays the sum on top of any line wins. That happened 92 times in 10,000 spins, once per 109, and six of the eight biggest ordinary hits of the series were coin sums rather than lines.

Three Bonus ships anywhere open the Trail Bonus, a board of 37 tiles: 25 on the main loop and two side trails of five and seven tiles. A pawn moves 1 to 9 steps per roll; a Normal tile pays the multiple printed on it and turns into an End tile, and landing on an End tile, tiles 16 and 20 at the start, closes the round with whatever was collected. Mystery chests hold one of eleven actions: Scout adds 100x to 1,000x to one tile, Commander adds 3x to 5x to every tile, One-Eye multiplies two to four tiles by 2x to 5x, Collector pays the sum of every tile, Collect & Command pays that sum and adds it to every tile, Reset and Super Reset revive the End tiles, a Coin Win pays 25x to 50x on the spot, and three persistent versions repeat their act after every roll until the round closes.

The Bonus Buy button sells the Trail Bonus at 100 times the stake, FUN 200 at FUN 2, and the rules quote 98.00% for the purchase against 96.29% for ordinary play. The round is capped at 50,000x the stake and a single Normal tile at 10,000x; stakes go from FUN 0.10 up to FUN 1,000 and there is no ante option. The build on the demo server is 2.0.3, dated 14 May 2024 on its own rules page.

Verdict

Coins paid, the trail waited

Measured against the 96.29% in the rules, the series returned 83.62% of stake, and the approximate 95% band runs 73.5 to 93.7%. The balance fell from FUN 5,000 to FUN 1,724.40, bottomed 1,657 stakes down on spin 9,991, and a 50-stake bankroll lasted 68 spins. Nothing paid on 8,015 of the 10,000 spins, a hit paid a 1.0x median, and 28 dry stretches reached 20 spins or more, the worst 36 from round 7,690.

Line wins made 59.1% of everything returned, coin sums 26.9% and the Trail Bonus 14.0%. The 92 coin sums averaged 24.5x with a 17x median, ten of them passed 50x, and the biggest, 118x on round 6022, was seven coins on three reels. The trail opened 20 times, once per 500 spins with a wait of up to 1,376 spins, and paid 58.6x on average with a 43x median: the ten rounds of ten rolls or more averaged 81.4x, the two four-roll rounds 6.5x, and none of the twenty met a persistent action.

Buying the trail fifty times at FUN 200 came back at 0.9336x of price on average and 0.32x in the middle, FUN 64, with 39 tickets below price. The sample leans on buy 12, FUN 2,714 or 13.57x: a Persistent Commander from the fourth roll, raised to 7x per turn by a second Commander on the sixth, lifted every Normal tile after each roll, Collect & Command on the eighth swept 629x, and the next Normal tile paid 662x. The other 49 tickets returned 0.68x of price between them.

The ordinary reels out-earned the board. Ninety-two coin sums paid 2,251 stakes where the 20 trail rounds paid 1,172, and the largest ordinary hit of the series, 143x on round 324, was fifteen Commander lines on a single screen, four of them five of a kind, with no coin and no chest in sight.
