What "best bonus" means here

A bonus round is the part of a slot everyone remembers and the part hardest to judge from a few sessions. The lab measures it the blunt way: where a game sells its feature, the rig buys it fifty times in a row at the listed price, in the same session and at the same stake as the base run, and logs what each purchase returned. The ranking value is the mean return divided by the price. At 1.00x the fifty buys paid for themselves; below it, they cost money; above it, the feature came out ahead in that run.

Games without a buy button are still in the table, ranked below the ones with a measured buy value. For them the bonus column shows how many natural triggers the ten-thousand-spin run produced and how many spins one trigger took on average, and their review pages carry the average result of those natural rounds. The base run behind that column is the same one that ranks the slots with the best RTP, so the two lists never disagree about a game's numbers, only about what to sort by.

A bought bonus is priced so that, on average and over enough purchases, it returns a little less than it costs: the buy has its own RTP, usually a fraction of a point away from the base game's. Fifty buys are far fewer than "enough", which is exactly why the values in this table spread so widely around the line. A game at 1.2x in our run is not a discount waiting to be collected; it is a game whose fifty purchases happened to include a large round. A game at 0.8x is not broken; it is a game whose large round did not come in those fifty.

What the ranking does tell you is the shape of the feature. Two games can both sit near 1.0x while one returns 0.6x on a typical buy and makes it up with a rare 10x, and the other returns 0.9x almost every time. The review pages show the whole ledger of fifty results, the median, and how many purchases lost money, so you can pick the shape you can afford rather than the average you cannot rely on. The rare 10x kind is also where the record rounds come from: the slots with the highest maximum winnings list is, in large part, a list of features that accumulated multipliers.

Buying is the loud way in; waiting is the quiet one. Over a long base run the feature triggers on its own at a rate the game designer set, and the price of a buy is usually calibrated against it: a 100x purchase on a game that triggers naturally about once per 200 spins costs about what those 200 spins would have cost, minus the base-game wins you would have collected on the way. The table shows both routes side by side: the bonus column counts natural triggers and their spacing, the buy column shows what paying for the shortcut returned.

The one thing the bought route cannot buy is variance. A natural trigger inside a base run lands on top of whatever the balance was doing; a purchase replaces two hundred small results with one large one. Players who want to see the feature choose the buy; players who want the session to last choose the wait.
