How it plays

7 rules screens from the game

Six reels with two to six symbols on the outer ones and two to seven on the middle four, 86,436 ways at the most. The buffalo tops the table and pays from two of a kind, 5x for a full six-reel way; the nine and ten sit at the bottom at 0.5x. A way needs the same symbol on consecutive reels starting at the first, and nothing cascades: one spin, one payout. The 78x on round 3930, the best base spin of the run, was a single evaluation.

The canyon wild appears on reels two to five and can carry 2x, 3x or 5x. Its multiplier applies to every win on the screen, and two multiplied wilds multiply each other. Three random modifiers can fire on any base spin: a floor of 10,000 ways, the full 86,436 ways, or a hundred buffalo symbols pressed onto the reel strips. None of these are separately logged; they show up in the results as the spins they produce.

Ten, fifteen or twenty free spins follow four, five or six bonus coins. Inside the round the wilds begin with no multiplier and gain 1x each time a winning combination is formed while a wild is on the screen, so a long round accumulates value. Three or more coins during the round add 5, 10, 15 or 20 spins with no limit. Of the 24 natural rounds, 16 ended at ten spins, three at fifteen, three at twenty, one at thirty (round 6378) and one at forty (round 8720); the last two are the two largest results of the run.

For 100x the bet the feature starts at once with four to six coins; the ante bet at 30 units instead of 20 makes the natural trigger three times as frequent and greys out the button. The rules put the return at 96.02% in every mode, call the game medium volatility, cap wins at 10,000x and set the stake between 0.20 and 360.

Verdict

who it suits, who should skip it

The balance never got above 64 bets up, and that was on round 152, the first bonus of the run. From there it went one way: 449 bets down at spin 2,000, 979 at 6,000, a low of 1,268 down at spin 8635, and a close at 98,120.90, 940 bets under the start. The two big rounds, 505x on 6378 and 405x on 8720, are worth about nine points of the logged return between them; without those two spins the figure would read close to 81.5%. The 50-bet bankroll lasted 317 spins, 100 bets 378 and 200 bets 547.

There is not much to the base game. Three quarters of spins paid nothing, eleven blank stretches of 20 spins or more, the longest 31 (rounds 7936 to 7966). Only 38 base rounds reached 20x and none passed 78x; every one of the five rounds above 100x was a free-spin round. The median hit of 1.8x is higher than in the tumbling games, because a Megaways way-win on a tall reel set pays several ways at once, but the hits are too rare to carry the session.

Free spins arrived naturally once per 417 spins with a 1,563-spin gap between rounds 4023 and 5586. Their median was 39.1x, their mean 87.5x; eight of 24 finished under 20x, the smallest 2.6x on round 3954, while four of the five above 100x ran longer than ten spins. Length is everything in this feature, because the wild multiplier only climbs while the round lasts.

Purchases at 200 a round returned 11,319 for the 10,000 spent, but in a very uneven way: 35 losing purchases, a median of 0.39x, and two rounds, buy 8 at 10.3x and buy 26 at 8.4x, that between them account for more than the whole profit. Twenty-two of the fifty bought rounds ran longer than ten spins, through a five-coin start or a retrigger, and the eight rounds above 2x all came from that group. Take away buy 8 and the average is 0.94x.

Measured upsides
  • Two natural rounds above 400x, both from retriggered free spins
  • Eight of fifty purchases came back above 2x, the average 1.132x
  • A 1.8x median hit, the highest of the lab's Megaways tests so far
Measured downsides
  • 90.6% logged, five and a half points under the declared 96.02%, with a 1,268-bet low
  • Base play never passed 78x in ten thousand spins
  • Under 20x in eight of 24 natural bonuses, one of them 2.6x
  • The median purchase returned 0.39x; 35 of 50 lost money
What the AI noticed during the run
  • Round 8720 ran forty free spins, the longest round of the run, and paid 405.5x; round 6378 ran thirty for 505.25x. No ten-spin round passed 150x.
  • The best base spin, 78x on round 3930, is smaller than six of the 24 natural bonuses.
  • After round 4023 the feature stayed away for 1,563 spins, the longest wait the lab has logged on a Megaways game, and the balance lost 505 bets in that stretch.
  • Buy 8 paid 10.3x and buy 10, two purchases later, paid 0.066x: the best and the worst of the fifty within three rounds.

FAQ

6 questions · answered from the log
Why did the free spins pay so unevenly?
Lab answer

Because the wild multiplier inside the feature starts at zero and climbs by one for every win formed while a wild is on the screen. A ten-spin round rarely gets far; the two rounds that ran to thirty and forty spins reached 505x and 405x. Of the 24 natural rounds, the sixteen that ended at ten spins had a median of about 22x.

Retriggers: how common were they?
Lab answer

Three or more bonus coins during the round add spins, and it happened in only two of the 24 natural rounds, 6378 and 8720, which became the two largest results of the run. In the fifty purchases 22 rounds went past ten spins, through either a five-coin start or a retrigger; all eight buys above 2x were in that group.

On Buffalo King Untamed, does the 100x purchase pay off?
Lab answer

The average says yes at 1.132x, the median says no at 0.39x, and both are true of the same fifty rounds. Two purchases returned 10.3x and 8.4x; 35 returned less than their price and five returned less than a tenth of it. A player buying once or twice is far more likely to see the median than the average.

Random modifiers: what are they and did they show up?
Lab answer

Three things can happen on any base spin: the ways count is forced to at least 10,000, or to the full 86,436, or a hundred extra buffalo symbols are added to the strips. The server does not flag them in its responses, so the lab cannot count them; their effect is inside the base-game figures, which came to 38 rounds at 20x or more and a top of 78x.

Ante bet at 30 units: sensible?
Lab answer

It costs 30 units per spin instead of 20 and triples the natural trigger rate, at the price of losing the buy button. Regular play produced one trigger per 417 spins here, so the ante version would be expected to trigger about once per 140 spins at a 50% higher cost per spin. The lab did not measure it.

How does this compare with the original Buffalo King Megaways?
Lab answer

The lab has not tested the original, so no measured comparison exists. On the rules screens the Untamed version adds the random modifiers, the ante bet at 30 units and a 10,000x cap; the wild multipliers of 2x, 3x and 5x and the 10-, 15- and 20-spin feature are the parts that read the same.
