How Often Do Slots Trigger the Bonus? Natural Trigger Rates by Provider, Measured

How often does a slot trigger its bonus?

In the median slot tested here a natural bonus starts once every 233 ordinary rounds, which is 4.3 bonuses per 1,000 rounds. The spread around that middle is enormous: the quickest trigger in the lab, Money Cart, fires once per 8 rounds, the slowest, Hellcatraz, once per 5,000. Across 163 tests and 2,820,000 logged rounds the rig has counted 18,807 natural bonus rounds, and 1 runs ended without a single one.

Those figures come from one method applied to every game: the official demo build on the provider’s own server, a long series of ordinary rounds at one stake, the buy button never touched, every server response logged. A bonus counts when the game starts it on its own, whether it is a free spins round, a respin feature or a pick-and-click bonus, and the interval is simply rounds divided by triggers over the whole run. Bought bonuses are logged separately and never mixed into these counts; what they returned is the subject of the companion report on bonus buys.

Which slot provider triggers the bonus most often?

Blueprint Gaming, with a median interval of one bonus per 120 rounds across its tested games, against Hacksaw Gaming at the other end with one per 323. That is a factor of 2.7 between the quickest and the slowest provider in the lab, measured on the same rig. The table below ranks every provider with 3 tests or more by that median interval and sets the pay of a typical bonus round next to it.

Two columns deserve a word. The interval is a median over the provider’s games, so a single bonus-only machine does not drag a provider to the top; Relax Gaming’s Money Cart games, which trigger every eight to ten rounds because the base game exists only to start the feature, sit in the table as four games among two dozen. The share-of-return column is the lab’s own measure of how much of what a game pays back arrives through the bonus round: triggers multiplied by the mean pay of a round, divided by the rounds played. A provider can trigger rarely and still route most of its return through the feature, and the next section is about exactly that trade.

Does a provider that triggers less often pay more per bonus?

Partly, and the trade is far from even. In the logs to 19 October 2026 the Quickspin games triggered about twice as often as the Pragmatic Play games, once per 146 rounds against once per 292 in the median game, and their median bonus round paid 46 times the stake against Pragmatic’s 80. Half the wait bought a little over half the pay. Nolimit City sat in between on both counts, one bonus per 199 rounds paying 68 times the stake. The current figures are in the table above; the pattern they describe is that interval and pay move together, but not in proportion.

The share-of-return column makes the trade visible. The provider whose games route the largest part of their return through the bonus round is currently Blueprint Gaming at 57% in the median game, the smallest share belongs to Big Time Gaming at 27%, and the lab-wide median is 32%. For a player the number says how much of a session’s money is tied up in waiting: at a 60% share, a session that ends before the bonus arrives has played a game paying roughly 40% of its stakes back.

Provider by provider: what the trigger counts look like

The paragraphs below describe the shape of each provider’s results; the numbers inside them recalculate from the current catalogue, and the dated figures are what the logs showed on 19 October 2026. Each provider name links to a page that lists every one of its tests with the same measurements.

Pragmatic Play

The largest group in the lab, 77 tests, and the one that defines the lab’s middle: a natural bonus once per 292 rounds in the median game, paying 81 times the stake. The quickest Pragmatic trigger at the moment belongs to Big Bass Bonanza Megaways and the slowest to 5 Lions Megaways 2. The spread inside the provider is wider than the spread between providers: on 19 October 2026 Big Bass Splash was starting its fishing feature once per 118 rounds, Buffalo King Megaways once per 408, and 5 Lions Megaways once per 526, with its sequel 5 Lions Megaways 2 at 625. The three Megaways titles make the player wait more than four times as long as the fishing game and pay accordingly: Buffalo King’s bonus round averaged 104 times the stake, Big Bass Splash’s 67. Gems Bonanza has no triggered feature at all and is the one Pragmatic run in the catalogue with a zero in the bonus column.

Relax Gaming

24 tests and the widest range of any provider. At one end the Money Cart machines, where every round is a short wait for the feature; at the other the slowest triggers in the whole lab: on 19 October 2026 Hellcatraz had started its bonus once in 5,000 rounds and Marching Legions once in 3,333, while Money Train 2 managed once per 526. The median Relax game currently triggers once per 253 rounds and pays 75 times the stake per bonus round; the longest single wait logged in a Relax run is 4,563 rounds, in Hellcatraz.

Nolimit City

Quicker than its reputation. Nolimit’s games are sold on huge ceilings, yet the median tested game triggers once per 199 rounds, more often than the Pragmatic median, with a bonus round paying 68 times the stake. Tombstone was the second-quickest trigger in the lab on 19 October 2026 at once per 44 rounds, because its Boothill feature starts from a modest symbol combination rather than three scatters. The provider’s volatility lives in the tail of the bonus round, not in the wait for it; the volatility report shows the same thing from the other side.

Quickspin

The quickest large provider in the lab by the median game, once per 146 rounds, 6.9 bonuses per 1,000, and also the one whose bonus rounds pay the least, 46 times the stake in the median game. On 19 October 2026 Golden Glyph was starting its feature once per 94 rounds, while Big Bad Wolf Megaways waited 571 rounds between triggers; the provider’s catalogue spans both habits.

Big Time Gaming

The Megaways originator triggers once per 272 rounds in the median game and pays 75 times the stake when it does, both figures close to the Pragmatic middle. What sets the provider apart is the hit rate between bonuses, the highest median of any group in the lab, so the wait is filled with small wins rather than dead spins; the provider page lists the games one by one.

Thunderkick, Blueprint Gaming, Play’n GO and Hacksaw Gaming

Smaller groups, each with 3 tests or more, so their medians move when a single test is added and should be read with that in mind. Blueprint’s games triggered quickest of the four on 19 October 2026, once per 120 rounds in the median game, with a bonus round paying 77 times the stake; Fishin’ Frenzy-style features that start from three scatters on a small grid simply arrive often. Play’n GO sat at once per 167 rounds and about 80 times the stake, and because the provider sells no bonus buys, every one of its features in the lab was earned in the base game. Thunderkick triggered once per 222 rounds, Hacksaw once per 323 with the richest bonus rounds of the four at 93 times the stake. The live medians are 222, 120, 167 and 323 rounds respectively.

Which slots trigger free spins most often, and which almost never?

The two tables below are the lab-wide extremes, recalculated from every published test. The top of the first table is dominated by bonus-only machines, games whose base game pays little or nothing and exists to start the feature; the Money Cart series is the clearest case, and the catalogue marks such games with a reels icon because their interval is not comparable with a game where the feature has to be waited for. The bottom table is where the long waits live, and the longest-gap column matters as much as the interval: a game that triggers once per 500 rounds on average can go 2,000 rounds without a feature, which at a normal pace is most of an evening.

How long is the longest wait for a bonus?

The longest gap between two natural triggers logged in a single run is 4,563 rounds, in Hellcatraz; the median longest gap across all games that triggered at all is 1,017 rounds. The provider whose median longest wait is the longest is currently Big Time Gaming, at 1,286 rounds in its median game. These gaps are the practical form of the interval: the average interval says how many bonuses a long session produces, the longest gap says how bad the unlucky stretch inside that session gets.

The gaps also explain why a short session can feel nothing like the published interval. A game that triggers once per 250 rounds does not trigger on round 250; the triggers are spread like any rare event, and a run of 10,000 rounds typically contains a few stretches two or three times the average and one stretch far longer. The re-test report shows the same games on a second run and the bonus counts moving by a median factor that would surprise anyone who takes the interval as a schedule.

What does a bonus round actually pay when it comes?

Across the lab the median game’s bonus round returns 75 times the stake, counting everything from the trigger spin onward: the scatter pay and any line wins on the spin that started the feature plus the free spins or respins themselves. The provider with the richest median bonus is Hacksaw Gaming at 93 times the stake, the leanest is Quickspin at 46. On 19 October 2026 the richest single bonus round in the logs was the one behind the biggest round in the catalogue, which the max win report tracks against the advertised ceilings.

Pay and frequency are two halves of one budget, and a third figure closes it: how much a round costs while the player waits. A game that triggers once per 300 rounds and pays 80 stakes per bonus hands back about 27 stakes per 100 rounds through the feature, roughly a quarter of its return; the rest has to come from the base game, which is why the hit rate and the dry-run columns on every review are not decoration. The best RTP ranking sorts the same tests by the total, feature and base together.

Is it better to buy the bonus than to wait for it?

It depends on what the provider charges, and the lab measures both sides. A bought bonus at 100 times the stake replaces, on average, about 233 rounds of waiting in the median game, and the companion bonus buy report shows that the purchases returned a mean of 0.93 times their price across the lab with 73% of tickets paying less than they cost. The natural bonus in the same games is not free either: it costs the rounds played to reach it. Which route costs less per bonus is a game-by-game question, and the review of each game lists both figures side by side under its Test card.

How these numbers update

Every table and every number in this report recomputes from the published tests whenever a new one is added or a game is re-run; the figures quoted for 19 October 2026 are the only static ones and are marked as such. Provider medians with few tests will move the most, and a provider enters the comparison table when it reaches 3 tests. The register below lists every game with its interval, longest gap and bonus pay, sortable by any of them.
